Watchmen

Are you watching ‘Watchmen’?

I’m currently VERY into the new HBO series, “Watchmen.” Regina King and Jean Smart are killing it on this show.

I’m also an unabashed stan for the 2009 film version, which sits at a mere 64% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics weren’t into it, but I still think it’s highly watchable, CGI Doctor Manhattan dong and all.

The weird thing is, I’ve never read the comic it’s based on, so as I’m watching the new “Watchmen,” series, I’m unburdened by institutional knowledge, but I keep trying to square the mythology with the movie. Is this the same universe or a complete reboot? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The first five episodes have set up some great questions, and I’m hoping the final four of the season make with the payoff. Because I think it’s going to be GOOD.

With “Watchmen” on the brain, here’s a quiz about the 2009 movie.

P.S. How dare those racist bastards on the show co-opt the Rorschach mask? He’s the best one!

Questions:

  1. Rorschach is investigating the death of Edward Blake when he discovers he was what costumed superhero?
  2. Before the rise of the Watchmen in the 1960s, there was a Golden Age of vigilante heroes from 1939-1949 that included the original Nite Owl and Silk Spectre. What was that group called?
  3. Adrian Veidt is the super-intelligent billionaire who kills millions and blames it on Doctor Manhattan in order to unite the opposing forces in the Cold War against a common enemy and create peace. He also used to be a superhero named what?
  4. Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II retire from crimefighting in 1977 thanks to the passage of what piece of legislation that makes “costumed adventuring” illegal?
  5. Several directors were attached at different times to the project before dropping out, including Terry Gilliam and Darren Aronofsky. What man, who would go on to helm several other superhero movies, finally directed “Watchmen”?
